Entering September is always a funny time of the year. In the human world, the children are going back to school. It’s a return to routine but it can also make life more frantic, even us without children feel the difference in the mood.
Outside of human activity, everything is telling us to slow down as the season begins to turn. The birds are no longer singing, their babies grown and fledged, many have left for the winter but our winter visitors haven’t arrived yet. The flowers are going to seed and the plants dying back, a gust of chilly wind sends leaves flying as they loosen on the branch. Most of the crops have been harvested or are about to be and soon the fields will be bare too. Squirrels are burying nuts and hedgehogs are feasting before their big sleep. Our thoughts are turning to jams and stews and jumpers and ankle boots. The world is slowing us down but humanity isn’t good at taking notice.
So, this is our challenge this September.
